The UWI St. Augustine takes the forefront at recent Vice-Chancellor’s Awards for Excellence

ST. AUGUSTINE, Trinidad and Tobago – Five outstanding faculty members and one Research Centre were in the spotlight at 20th instalment of The University of the West Indies’ (UWI) Vice-Chancellor’s Awards for Excellence on October 23rd. 

Of the six awards presented, the St. Augustine Campus took five, taking the total number of those honoured to 101. Some 300 well-wishers, turned out to join the celebrations. Sir George Alleyne, Chancellor of The University, Ewart Williams, Chairman of The UWI St. Augustine Campus and Distinguished Fellow, and President of the Chinese Agricultural Science, University Professor KE Bingsheng were among the evening’s special guests. 

Vice-Chancellor E. Nigel Harris presented the award to Professor Shivananda Nayak of the Department of Pre-Clinical Sciences at the St Augustine Campus, for excellence in teaching. Professor Horace Fletcher, former Head of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology and current Dean of the Faculty of Medical Sciences at The UWI Mona Campus, and Professor Pathmanathan Umaharan, Head of the Cocoa Research Centre at The UWI St. Augustine Campus were awarded for research accomplishments. Two awards for all-round performance were presented to Dr Carol Logie, lecturer at the St. Augustine Campus’ School of Education and Administrative Director of its Family Development and Children's Research Centre, for her service to the university community and public service; and to the Seismic Research Centre for research accomplishments and public service. From the Cave Hill Campus, two-time winner, Professor of Law, Rose-Marie Antoine was honoured this year for public service. Each received US$5,000, as a part of their prize, having passed the rigorous assessment process, first at the campus level then by a university-wide committee for the final selection. 

In his address, the Vice-Chancellor Harris noted that an event like this gives University administrators, academics, staff and students a reason to press on and perform exceptionally, despite the many challenges faced.  He added, “Let us celebrate these individuals who exemplify our ability to triumph over all the odds”. 

Dr Carol Logie delivered a reply on behalf of the awardees on the evening. She stated “Within this environment, we, the awardees have demonstrated that we are not afraid to try new methodologies and new ways of getting the job done”. 

This ceremony was the first event to be held at The University’s newly built Teaching and Learning Centre on Circular Road in St Augustine.
