ST. AUGUSTINE, Trinidad and Tobago –Guardian Group and The University of the West Indies (UWI) have, for the 15th year, teamed up to host the Premium Teaching Open Lecture. The Open Lecture will be held on November 29th, at The UWI’s Daaga Auditorium in St. Augustine starting at 5.30pm. This event alternates annually with the Premium Teaching Awards and is hosted both in Trinidad and Tobago and Jamaica. The teaching awards are aimed at recognising and rewarding teaching excellence by The UWI lecturers. The Open lectures aim at raising the profile of teaching through exposure to its scholarship and best practices. These events are consistent with Guardian Group’s promotion and achievement of excellence within the Caribbean region.
This year’s lecture themed “Teaching – Joys and Challenges of the Greatest Profession” will be delivered by Dr. Todd Zakrajsek of the Department of Family Medicine at University of North Carolina. Dr. Zakrajsek currently directs four National Conferences on College and University Teaching and Learning and serves on several editorial boards for journals in the area of teaching and learning; he has also published and presented widely on the topic of teaching, academic leadership and student learning. One of his most recent publications is a book which he co-authored with Terry Doyle: The New Science of Learning (2013).
Among those invited to attend this lecture are Minister of Science Technology and Tertiary Education, Minister of Education and Permanent Secretaries in both ministries; Guardian Group’s Executives and Managers, Principals and Teachers of Secondary and Primary schools; Members of The UWI St. Augustine Campus community and members of other tertiary level institutions.
