UWI launches book on early childhood development and education in Caribbean countries

ST. AUGUSTINE, Trinidad and Tobago – A new book by Caribbean experts in the field of early childhood development, titled “Issues and Perspectives in Early Childhood Development and Education in Caribbean Countries,” was recently published by Caribbean Educational Publishers (2003) Ltd. Editors are Dr Carol Logie, Administrative Director of The UWI, St. Augustine Family Development and Children’s Research Centre (FDCRC) and Lecturer at the UWI St. Augustine School of Education, together with Professor Jaipaul L. Roopnarine, Adjunct Professor of Teaching and Leadership in the School of Education at Syracuse University, and a research scientist at the FDCRC. 

Contributors to the edited volume include: Jaipaul L. Roopnarine, Elsa Leo-Rhynie, Janet Brown, Pamela Gaskin, Jacqueline Sharpe, Natasha Mohammed, Carol Logie, Alice S. Honig, Marcelle De Govia, Susan Gopaul, Shenelle Boyce, Corinne Smith and Faith A. Harding.

The ten chapters in the book have been classified into two sections. Part one treats with issues related to childrearing practices, children’s nutritional status in the Caribbean, early mental health and pedagogical dilemmas in early childhood environments in the Caribbean. Part two presents various perspectives on child development and include perspectives on investing in inclusive education, home-based early intervention programmes, the role of non-governmental organisations in providing improved quality care in the Caribbean, infant and toddler care and social infrastructure in the Caribbean.

NOTES TO THE EDITOR:

Dr Carol Logie: 

Dr Logie has been a practitioner and consultant in the field of Early Childhood Development in Caribbean for over 30 years. She was for seven years the Chair of the National Council for Early Childhood Care and Education, and worked as a consultant for several early education projects undertaken around the world, as well as for organisations including the Inter-American Development Bank, the World Bank, UNICEF and the Bernard van Leer Foundation. 

Dr Logie continues to lend her experience and knowledge as a guide for the development of early childhood education globally, as she works as a consultant to teachers and policy makers in Hong Kong, Europe and the Caribbean.  Dr Logie was also a recipient at the recently concluded UWI Vice Chancellor’s Awards for Excellence in October 2013, in recognition of her scholarship, research and contribution to the body of knowledge on early childhood education and family development.

Professor Jaipaul L. Roopnarine:  A native of the Caribbean, his research interests include father-child relationships across cultures with a particular interest in Caribbean families and childhood outcomes.   

He has published extensively in the areas of developmental psychology and early childhood education. Among his most recent books is, Approaches to Early Childhood Education (with James E. Johnson) now in its 6th edition (Pearson Education). Professor Roopnarine is the current Editor of the journal Fathering.
