$25,000 at stake as UWI formally launches T20 Cricket Tournament

ST. AUGUSTINE, Trinidad and Tobago – The second national UWI T20 Cricket Tournament is back from January 10th to 25th, 2014 with a cash pot of TT$25,000 at stake for the winning team. The tournament was formally launched today, Friday January 3rd, at a ceremony at the Office of the Campus Principal, UWI St. Augustine.

The knockout tournament will again feature sixteen teams, playing through a preliminary round, quarterfinal round and semi-final round with undefeated teams progressing to the final. The tournament will also feature top clubs in Trinidad as well as Tobago, along with teams from The UWI and UTT. 

The defending champion, Esmeralda, from Central Trinidad, will be the top ranked team for the 2014 competition. There will be cash prizes for all teams progressing beyond the preliminary round, and prizes for man-of-the-match, “big sixes” and special bowling performances.

The tournament, which has the full support of the Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board, will feature three double headers and two triple headers. 

At the launch, the draw for the Preliminary Round was done by Major David Benjamin, the new Director of the UWI Sport and Physical Education Centre, and the knockout match schedule is as follows:

The launch also featured remarks from Campus Principal and Pro Vice-Chancellor, Professor Clement Sankat and a competition overview by President of  the UWI Cricket Club, Dr Trevor Alleyne. Campus Registrar, Mr. Richard Saunders served as the launch Chairperson.  

All matches will be played at the Sir Frank Worrell Cricket Ground of the UWI Sport and Physical Education Centre (SPEC).
