St. Augustine

The University of the West Indies (UWI) Open Campus, Gordon Street St. Augustine, will host the launch of Homelessness and Street Children in the Caribbean, on Thursday 5th June, 2008 at the UWI St. Augustine Learning Resource Centre (LRC). Homelessness and Street Children in the Caribbean, a first in the region and the result of a four-year project by Dr. Ronald Marshall, Prof. Ralph Premdas and Prof. Joe Springer, will be presented from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Writers who have made contribution to Homelessness and Street Children in the Caribbean come from different disciplines within the Social Sciences. Dr. Lennox Bernard, provided ‘Putting Homelessness into Academic and Public Discourse’, Prof. Ralph Premdas: ‘Homelessness: Developing a Caribbean Theory’ and Dr. Ronald Marshall: ‘ Street Children, Deviant Behaviour, and Delinquency’. Their contributions and interpretations of the phenomenon of homelessness and street children is said to‘strike at the heart of an individual’s human worth: self respect, self-esteem and social worth.’

This publication attempts to sensitise students of the social sciences to be influenced to conduct investigations along related lines so that policy makers can establish a link between economy and society. The publication uniquely demonstrates the reality of homelessness and the likelihood of its increase within the Caribbean region, especially during a period of new economic and market policies which are the main focus of Caribbean government administrations. Homelessness and Street Children in the Caribbean is currently available in the UWI Bookshop and in bookstores nationwide.
