UWI to host Discovery Camp 2008

For Release Upon Receipt - June 4, 2008

St. Augustine

Arts-in-Action, the Applied Creative Arts Outreach Unit of the Department of Creative and Festival Arts’ (DCFA) of The University of the West Indies (UWI) will be conducting its annual Discovery Camp for children between the ages of five to thirteen years during the July-August period. Discovery Camp 2008 will run from Monday 14th July to Saturday 2nd August, Monday to Friday between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. at the Department of Creative and Festival Arts on Agostini Street, St. Augustine. Weekly visits to the pool and field trips are also included in the camp package which costs $450.00 per child. Discounts are applied to siblings registering and also to children of UWI Staff.

This year the theme will be ‘wemaaoui!’ derived from ‘We making art oui!’ This marks a creative attempt at conceptualising a 'new word' to capture an expression that speaks to the sentiment underlying this year's camp. In keeping with the unmistakable Kweyol sound of the theme and the Kweyol expression that went into its devise, this year the campers will enjoy participating in storytelling, folk dancing, drumming and folk music workshops and performance.

Now in its 20th year, the Discovery Camp is a non-profit undertaking that seeks to provide a facility through which young people can engage in arts-based activities that are both fun and worthwhile. The Discovery Camp uses the disciplines of art and craft, dance, drama and music as learning and developmental tools.
