Arthur Lok Jack GSB Receives another United Way Award

For Release Upon Receipt - July 4, 2008

St. Augustine

The University of the West Indies, Arthur Lok Jack Graduate School of Business (GSB) has been awarded for its outstanding contribution to the United Way Trinidad and Tobago (UWTT) National Campaign for the third year running. The business school captured the Award for “Excellence in Community Service” at the 2007 UWTT Campaign Closing Ceremony held recently at Angostura Ltd.

Arthur Lok Jack GSB became a UWTT member organisation in 2005 when it joined the Payroll Deduction Programme. This unique fundraising method seeks the support of the national workforce by encouraging employees to commit a weekly/monthly contribution via voluntary payroll deduction towards a community fund. UWTT then allocates the aggregated funds and monitors their use, ensuring that these are wise social investments.

This year the Lok Jack GSB achieved an employee penetration rate of 95% - the highest amongst all participating companies. The contribution of the Lok Jack GSB’s staff was added to a community fund from which some 45 non-governmental organisations have accessed $7.3 million dollars within the last two and a half years.

United Way is a mechanism for mobilizing resources from the private sector and distributing those resources among non-governmental organisations working in communities all across Trinidad and Tobago.

Among the NGOs benefiting from United Way funding are Moms for Literacy, the Adult Literacy Tutors Association, the Bridge of Hope, the Hope Centre, the Tobago Literacy Unit and Families in Action.
