UWI St Augustine Campus Officially Installs Campus Principal

On Friday 10th October, 2008, The University of the West Indies (UWI), St Augustine Campus officially installed Professor Clement Sankat as Campus Principal. The installation ceremony took place at the Daaga Auditorium, adjacent to the Centre for Language Learning (CLL) from 6:00 p.m.

The Ceremony, steeped in University tradition, and hosted by the Vice Chancellor Professor E. Nigel Harris began with an academic procession which was heralded in with the music of the UWI Festival Arts Chorale. This ceremonial installation of the incoming principal attracted representatives of regional governments, members of Parliament, several leaders of the local business industry, as well as members of University Staff from across the region.

The Ceremony was opened with a special welcome by the University Registrar, Mr. C. William Iton, who observed that “Professor Sankat has a vision for the campus that he has successfully shared, and he has set clear goals and priorities which he will achieve with the willing support of the St. Augustine team and the entire UWI.  The University has found in Professor Sankat the kind of leader who can take this noble and august institution to the next level.”

Speakers at the Ceremony included former Pro Vice Chancellor and Principal of the Cave Hill Campus, Professor Sir Hilary Beckles who spoke on behalf of the Campus Principals of both the Mona, Cave Hill and Open Campuses; UWI Alumni Association President, Mr. Jerry Medford; President of the West Indian Group of University Teachers (WIGUT), Dr. Godfrey Steele and the President of the Guild of Students, Mr. Hillan Morean.

The official installation and presentation of the Campus Principal began with an address by Vice Chancellor Professor E. Nigel Harris who invited Chancellor, Sir George Alleyne to complete the ceremonial installation.

Professor Sankat in his inaugural speech said “I look forward to working together with all of you to overcome the immediate challenges and to shape the vision of One Caribbean, One University together, and to make this my final destination in what has so far been a wonderful and awesome journey.”

After Professor Sankat’s inaugural address, Mr. Iton closed the ceremony and the academic procession was ushered out with the music of the UWI Festival Arts Chorale and Tassa Drums. Lord Relator and the Clico Shiv Shakti Dance Troupe also provided entertainment on the evening.
