The Arthur Lok Jack Graduate School of Business, The University of the West Indies (UWI), recently presented the first “GHL Financial Management Best Group Project Award”, a project designed to challenge students to think of the course material in the context of being a practitioner. The business school’s IMBA Financial Management class, cohort 22, were the first to participate in this initiative, implemented by course facilitator, Mr. Jason Julien, CFA.
Mr. Julien, Assistant Vice President – Investments, Guardian Asset Management, said that the exercise was intended “to challenge the students to not only analyse the case materials, but also to research actual economic and market data, and advanced financial theories and concepts.”
Julien stated that the judging was designed to grill the students under real-life practitioner-type conditions. Students entered the judging room unaware of the identity of the members of the judging panel. This panel included Narisa Hosein, Portfolio Manager, Guardian Asset Management; Richard Look Kin, VP – Deal Management, RBTT Merchant Bank; and Jason Julien.
This “GHL Financial Management Best Group Project Award” had eight groups of contenders. The winning group, G5, achieved an unprecedented total score of 98%, as according to Mr. Julien, “they stood out in their clarity of thought and understanding of the key elements of the case, and were very comprehensive in terms of the detail of the analysis and depth of the research.” This group was comprised of four persons, who each received individually branded, executive desktop organisers sponsored by Guardian Holdings Limited.
