For Release Upon Receipt - December 15, 2008

St. Augustine

“Lifelong Learning: The Key to Strategic Movement through Global Crisis” was the theme of the feature address by Professor Clement Sankat, Pro Vice Chancellor and Campus Principal, The University of the West Indies (UWI), St. Augustine Campus at the UWI School of Business and Applied Studies Limited (trading as ROYTEC) 2008 Graduation Ceremony. This ceremony took place on Friday 21st November, at 6:30 p.m., at the UWI Sport and Physical Education Centre (SPEC), St. Augustine.

Professor Sankat focused on the “profound shifts in the basic architecture of human life” that have occurred in recent times, referencing Usain Bolt, Barack Obama, the US military campaign in the Middle East, as well as the ongoing global food and energy crises. Sankat challenged the graduates to capitalise on the opportunities that these global crises have created. He charged that they all “rise to the challenge of developing innovative, flexible, adaptive and creative responses to today’s realities.” Professor Sankat closed his address by urging the graduands to pursue postgraduate degrees and lifelong learning as a means to remain relevant to national and regional development in the midst of the current environment of global crisis.

The graduation ceremony began with the procession of the graduands and a welcome address, delivered by Susan Russell. After Prof Sankat’s feature address, there was a performance by Ms. Tania Loobie, followed by the presentation of certificates and awards.  The ceremony was rounded off to a close with a Valedictory address by Zaida Mohammed and a Vote of thanks by Susan Russell.
