UWI and ACCA Partner for Another 3-Year Term

The University of the West Indies (The UWI) St Augustine and The Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) and have renewed its Memorandum of Understanding for a further three years in a signing ceremony recently at the Trinidad campus.

Signing on behalf of both bodies were Pro Vice-Chancellor and Campus Principal of The UWI St. Augustine Campus, Professor Brian Copeland and Ms. Shelly-Ann Mohammed, Head of ACCA Caribbean. On hand to support the signing were Dr. Acolla Lewis-Cameron, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Head of the Department of Management Studies at UWI St. Augustine; Mrs. Christine Sahadeo, Senior Lecturer in Accounting and former ACCA international assembly representative; Mrs. Debra Coryat-Patton, St. Augustine Campus’ Legal Officer; and Mr. Shane Kissoon, employer manager at ACCA Caribbean.

 This second MOU between ACCA and The UWI St Augustine seeks to develop and promote information sessions and learning opportunities for students of both organizations. This includes the co-hosting of career building activities for The UWI St Augustine students on topical subject matters like taxation, leadership, governance and ethics, participation in UWI’s World of Work and financial literacy programmes. The collaboration also supports awards for the annual top achievers in accounting and finance and the continued roll out of the ACCA Accelerate programme which allows final year students of the accredited BSc Accounting (Special) degree programme to register with ACCA at significantly discounted fees even while they are still at University.

Speaking on behalf of ACCA at the signing, Ms. Shelly-Ann Mohammed said, “ACCA is pleased to renew our partnership commitment to UWI St Augustine. As the premier accounting qualification in the region working hand in hand with the flagship University in the Caribbean, the aims of this MOU can only seek to enhance our reputations while providing valuable learning and opportunity to future finance professionals”.

Professor Copeland expressed his thanks to the ACCA for their continued commitment to The UWI which will help graduates to be better prepared to seamlessly transition into the work place environment. “In its quest to achieve its mandate ‘to advance learning, create knowledge and foster innovation for the positive transformation of the Caribbean and the wider world’ The University of the West Indies recognises the need to engage in outreach initiatives to provide opportunities for continuous learning and up-skilling for the world of work. As such, we are truly grateful to the ACCA for undertaking to support our outreach activities by promoting and conducting jointly branded sessions at secondary schools in Trinidad and Tobago,” said Professor Copeland.
