Professor Clive Landis is new Pro Vice-Chancellor for Undergraduate Studies

Friday, 2 August 2019—The University of the West Indies (The UWI) is pleased to announce the appointment of Professor Clive Landis as Pro Vice-Chancellor for Undergraduate Studies with effect from August 1, 2019. He succeeds Professor Alan Cobley who served in the position for two outstanding three-year terms.

Professor Landis brings experience from his previous posting as Deputy Principal of the Cave Hill Campus —with its delegated responsibilities on student matters—into his new role as Pro Vice-Chancellor for Undergraduate Studies, imbued with a sense of the importance to place students at the centre of all that the University does. He also brings a track record of teaching, research, and outreach into his role as a senior university administrator.

In 2004, he joined the staff of The UWI upon relocating from Imperial College London to take up a post as Senior Lecturer in the George Alleyne Chronic Disease Research Centre (GA-CDRC) at Cave Hill. He earned a promotion to a Professorship in Cardiovascular Research in 2009 and was appointed Director of the CDRC in 2013. Professor Landis has published over 150 scientific papers and conference presentations, the majority arising from research conducted at the Edmund Cohen Vascular Research Laboratory that he founded as an annexe to the CDRC.

His ongoing research is focused on the role of inflammation, particularly the resolution of inflammation, in vascular diseases and recovery from surgery. More recently however, Professor Landis has focused on viral research: established viruses such as HIV, as well as emerging viruses such as Zika. His interest in HIV has been driven by a fifteen-year collaboration with the Ministry of Health of Barbados, during which he accepted appointment as the Honorary Director of the Government HIV Laboratory from 2011 – 2019.

Professor Landis led the HIV Laboratory through two successful accreditation cycles with the most prestigious international accrediting body, the College of American Pathologists. He is engaged in building laboratory capacity regionally as Founder and Chairman of the Caribbean Cytometry & Analytical Society and as Chair of The UWI’s Zika Task Force.

He will remain based at Cave Hill in Barbados during his tenure as Pro Vice-Chancellor.
