New Appointments at The University of the West Indies

The UWI Regional Headquarters Jamaica. Friday, December 13, 2019—The University of the West Indies (The UWI) has announced that the following appointments across the regional university were approved at its last Finance and General Purposes Committee meeting.

Cave Hill Campus

Dr. Kenneth Connell, Lecturer in the Faculty of Medical Sciences and former Deputy Dean (Preclinical) has been appointed Public Orator.

Dr Connell is Chair of the Principal’s Task Force for FMS International Outreach and also of the UG Transnational Programme Articulation Agreement Committee. In addition, Dr Connell chairs the Campus Medical & Health Services Committee; the Barbados Drug Formulary Committee; and is a member of the Barbados Medical Council.  He is Governor, American College of Physicians Caribbean Chapter.

The Public Orator is a traditional official post at universities. The Public Orator, in this case at the Cave Hill Campus, acts as the voice of the University on public occasions.

St. Augustine Campus

Professor Phyllis Pitt-Miller

Professors Phyllis Pitt-Miller and Zulaika Ali have been conferred the title of Professor Emerita, Clinical Surgical Sciences and Paediatrics respectively, in the Faculty of Medical Sciences.

Professor Pitt-Miller, the holder of the Trinidad and Tobago Chaconia Medal (Gold) in 1994 for Long and Meritorious Service to Medicine, is Sessional Consultant in Anaesthetics and Intensive Care at the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex. She is a former Dean of Faculty, Head and Professor of Clinical Anaesthesia and Intensive Care and was the first head of the newly sanctioned ICU Department at Port-of-Spain General Hospital.

 Professor Zulaika Ali

Professor Zulaika Ali, the holder of the Trinidad and Tobago Chaconia Medal (Silver) in 2010 and The UWI Vice-Chancellor Award for Excellence for Contributions to Public Service (2012), is a former Deputy Dean (Clinical). She served as Director in many areas including the postgraduate Diploma in the Management of HIV Infection, the Trinidad and Tobago Health Training Centre, UWI Telehealth Programme, Head of Child Health Unit, Head of Department of Clinical Medical Services and University Examiner for the final year Medicine and Therapeutics examinations of the MB.BS programme. Professor Ali also served as The UWI representative to the Medical Board of Trinidad and Tobago and was Chairperson from 2009-2010.

The Emeritus (Emerita for women) designation generally allows former office-holders of The UWI to retain their titles after retirement; in this case, of University Professors. Professor Pitt-Miller served from 1975, retiring in 2009 and Professor Ali retired in 2013, after 38 years of service - both at The UWI St Augustine Campus.
