The University of the West Indies (UWI), St. Augustine, in conjunction with Republic Bank Limited (RBL) and the UWI Alumni Association (T&T chapter), held the annual World of Work (WOW) Seminar at the UWI Sport and Physical Education Centre (SPEC) on Saturday 7th February, 2009. This event, which attracted over 1200 UWI students, was designed to equip final year UWI students with some of the necessary tools for long-term success in the globalised work environment.

At the WOW Seminar, Mrs. Giselle La Ronde-West, President of the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC) was a feature speaker. In her presentation entitled ‘Navigating the Interview’ Ms. La Ronde-West advised the students on a vast variety of issues that fell under the umbrella of interviewing techniques. She stressed the importance of comportment and proper interview etiquette, while encouraging students to “be prepared for anything during the interview process”.

Mr. Derek Chin, Executive Chairman of Movie Towne, was also on hand to offer advice about developing into “independent thinkers”. His presentation centered on the theme of entrepreneurship and challenged students to take risks. Chin also shared his personal life story so as to give students a taste of an entrepreneurial mindset and the hurdles that can arise in the world of commerce.

At this event, UWI staff members, Ms. Deirdre Charles, Director Student Services, and Mr. Jeremy Callaghan, Campus Registrar, delivered opening remarks. Also, on behalf of the Sponsor- Republic Bank Limited, UWI Branch Sales Manager, Ms. Shantie Ramoutar, made an introductory address to the students, in which she assured all of her company’s commitment to “the holistic development of the student.” The seminar concluded with brief closing remarks made by Mr. James Richardson, President of the UWI Alumni Association.

Participants of the WOW 2009 Seminar had previously attended the Resume Writing Workshop which taught students how to make their resumes more competitive in the global job market. The WOW 2009 Programme will continue with Mock Interview Sessions to be held on Saturday 28th February and Saturday 7th March, 2009. These sessions will allow each student to practice their interview skills with real business professionals.

Next, the highly anticipated Recruitment Fair will showcase over 50 companies and organisations from a variety of fields who will recruit students for either vacation or graduate employment. The Recruitment Fair will take place from the 11th to 13th March, 2009 with one day open to all returning students and the remaining two days restricted to final year, graduating students.
