Navigating Technology Innovation in Sport: UWI-FIFA-CIES host Sports Management Public Lecture

The UWI St. Augustine Campus, Trinidad and Tobago. Friday, January 28, 2022 – Members of the public are invited to Navigating Technology Innovation in Sport - an online public lecture hosted by The Department of Management Studies of The University of the West Indies (The UWI) St. Augustine Campus, FIFA and the International Centre for Sports Studies (CIES).

The UWI/FIFA/CIES Sports Management Online Public Lecture is a comprehensive and interactive session with featured speaker Nicolas Evans, from Zurich, Switzerland, Head of Football Research and Standards at FIFA working in the Football Technology & Innovation environment.

“Evidence-based, empirical research needs to be at the heart of any innovations and developments in this sector whereby any new technology or implementation must meet needs,” Mr. Evans explains. Over the past decade, he has been driving data-driven decision-making in sport with concrete results being implemented at FIFA World Cups.

At the heart of scientific validation of products, technologies and services within football, Mr. Evans has contributed to creating globally established standards in sport. Most notably, he has driven for validation of Electronic Performance and Tracking Systems and has authored test procedures for Video Assistant Referee (VAR), virtual offside lines and further technologies in football.

Adding to his wealth of expertise and knowledge, Mr. Evans was the leading force behind FIFA’s Innovation Programme which seeks a more structured interaction with the start-up scene to ensure football’s needs and what the market offers can meet in a meaningful way with the aim of taking the next step in embracing technical innovation and digitisation.

This online public lecture takes place on Saturday January 29th, 2022, at 10:00am to 12:00 noon via Zoom. The cost is free and open to all members of the public and past and current university students.
