Wednesday 9 March 2022 – The Department of Mathematics and Statistics (DMS) in the Faculty of Science and Technology at The University of the West Indies (The UWI) St. Augustine Campus will host its annual UWI Math Fair this Friday, 11 March 2022 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The 2022 event will be held virtually (via YouTube and Zoom) and is themed “Virtual Mathematics? Yes, it is Real.”

Math Fairs have grown in popularity as interactive events that give educators an opportunity to have students do problem-solving activities, using Mathematics in novel ways. For the UWI, such events align with the mission of the institution to advance learning, create knowledge and foster innovation for the positive transformation of the Caribbean and the wider world. The fair targets mainly secondary school students, with the aim of sparking enthusiasm for the various applications of Mathematics in real life.

In this 5th edition, secondary schools will compete for the 2022 Challenge Trophy, to be awarded based on overall performance and involvement in the event. Prior to the event date, several competitions are being held online. Some competitions are also open to teachers and tertiary level students. E-certificates of participation will be awarded to all who enter the various competitions. Trophies/medals/vouchers will be awarded to selected winners.

The virtual UWI Math Fair kicks off with an Opening Ceremony, featuring an address by Deputy Campus Principal, Professor Indar Ramnarine, followed by a DMS Real Talk session, in which students will be given the opportunity to hear from some lecturers of the Department and have their questions answered.
