St. Augustine

ST. AUGUSTINE, Trinidad and Tobago. Tuesday 12th July 2022 – Thousands inclusive of prospective students and their families, staff and corporate sponsors flocked to The University of the West Indies (The UWI) St. Augustine Campus, for a 3-day Open Day experience that ran from July 8 to 10, 2022. The Campus issued a general invitation for prospects to ‘jump in a car; hop on a shuttle; bring your friends and family to enjoy a day on Campus’.

There were expo-style Faculty booths in the JFK Quadrangle, Faculty information sessions in the JFK Lecture Theatre; and an on-site application centre complete with advisers on the process as well as on bursaries, scholarships, and other funding mechanisms. In addition to the expo, there were giveaways, tours of Student Halls, and lots of food to make it a wonderful family and friends’ day.

Zion Benjamin, an applicant in the Faculty of Medical Sciences loved the Faculty’s booth: “It was so engaging! I got to learn CPR and to do a suture. I was able to think about it and decide if this is really what I want to do.”

A parent, Fazal Mohammed, has a son beginning at the St. Augustine Campus this academic year, studying engineering; his daughter is also carded to enter the university in 2023. “It’s the first time visiting the Campus and the Open Day. I was very impressed. Engineering will be a whole new chapter of his life.”

Pro Vice-Chancellor and Campus Principal of The UWI St. Augustine Campus, Professor Brian Copeland was delighted at the response and the engagement. “After two years of online and hybrid teaching and learning, it’s good to see the Campus come alive with young people again as we prepare for a return to pre-Pandemic teaching from September.”

Mrs. Wynell Gregorio, Director of Marketing and Communications which also has responsibility for student recruitment, noted that, the Open Days is part of a series of online and face-to-face activities encouraging prospects to apply. These activities included an evening in June at the Hilton Trinidad which was dedicated to Postgraduate study and allowed prospective students to fully engage with relevant Faculty and staff.

The application deadline is July 31, 2022. Interested persons can log on to https://sta.uwi.edu/ to apply.
