ST. AUGUSTINE, Trinidad and Tobago. Thursday, August 11, 2022 – “The education system and its vulnerabilities are open to forces of social contact and social class,” said Professor Emeritus, Ramesh Deosaran (ORTT) as he donated a collection of his books to The University of the West Indies (The UWI) St. Augustine Campus School of Education Library on 27th July 2022.

Professor Deosaran encompasses a wealth of experience and expertise in teaching, research and policy development emphasizing crime and justice, institutional development, and education. He is a former Independent Senator in the Parliament of Trinidad and Tobago, former Director of The UWI Centre of Criminology and the Psychological Research Centre as well as the President (Acting) and Programme Professor in Public Safety of the University of Trinidad and Tobago.

Among the books donated in his collection were, Inequality crime and education in Trinidad and Tobago: Removing the masks; Education, race, class, and politics in post-colonial Trinidad and Tobago; Psychonomics and poverty; A society under siege; Eric Williams-The man, his ideas and politics; Cultural Diversity-Politics, education and society; Race and politics in a divided nation; The dynamics of community policing; and Social psychology in the Caribbean.

In handing over the collection, Professor Deosaran explained that these forces “work against the ideal of education” and while deepening social stratification it creates a challenge in closing the gap created by such inequalities.

Receiving the books on behalf of the Library was the Deputy Campus Librarian, (The UWI) St. Augustine Campus, Miss Allison Dolland, who expressed gratitude for the gift and underscored the Library’s role in preserving such publications for current and future scholars.

Professor Jerome De Lisle, Director, School of Education, in accepting the gift, also praised Professor Deosaran for producing scholarly work that had had significant social impact in our small society.
