The Mystic Masseur’s Wife to be launched at V.S. Naipaul’s Annual Memorial 2022

ST. AUGUSTINE, Trinidad and Tobago. Tuesday August 16, 2022- The Department of Literary, Cultural & Communication Studies (LCCS) at The University of the West Indies (The UWI) St. Augustine Campus is celebrating the life and works of Sir Vidiadhar Surajprasad (V.S.) Naipaul at the Annual Memorial 2022.  This year’s virtual event takes place on Wednesday 17th August 2022 at 6pm and will feature the launch of The Mystic Masseur’s Wife, a book by Dr. Vijay Maharaj. 

At this year’s memorial, the virtual conversations will focus on “The Wife” in dialogue with Naipaul’s  Mystic Masseur protagonist, Ganesh Ramsumair, a frustrated writer who rises from poverty to become a successful colonial politician.

Panellists from The UWI St Augustine Campus include Dr. Bhoendradatt Tewarie, former Campus Principal, Dr. Sue-Ann Barratt, Head of the Institute for Gender and Development Studies (IGDS), Dr. Victoria Chang, Research Assistant in the Department of Literary, Cultural & Communication Studies (LCCS), Mr. Tyrone Ali, Lecturer and PhD candidate in Interdisciplinary Gender Studies and Ms. Renuka Anandjit, PhD candidate, Research Assistant and Coordinator of the Undergraduate student group Ignite, both from the IGDS. Sir Vidia Naipaul was a renowned author from Trinidad and Tobago, and the 2001 Nobel Prize winner for literature. He personified through his work and personal accomplishments, the individual determination to be liberated which he described is a matter of will and choice and most importantly intellect. He is regarded as one of the greatest literary masters of his time and his work continues to be read and critiqued globally since his passing in August 2018.
