UWI, CARPHA, PAHO, Agriculture Ministry & Guyana Livestock Authority host World Rabies Day Webinar

ST. AUGUSTINE, Trinidad and Tobago. Wednesday September 28, 2022 The School of Veterinary Medicine, The University of the West Indies (The UWI) St. Augustine Campus is collaborating with the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA), Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), Ministry of Agriculture Lands and Fisheries, and the Guyana Livestock Development Authority to host a webinar “One Health, Zero Deaths” today, September 28th, 2022 as part of the annual observance of World Rabies Day.

The webinar will educate the public and strengthen the call for community engagement so as to collaboratively prevent rabies by reducing the risk of exposure to the virus. It emphasizes the need to raise awareness about rabies and bring together partners to enhance prevention and control efforts locally, regionally, and worldwide.

Established in 2007 and observed annually on September 28, World Rabies Day serves to increase public awareness of rabies and engage stakeholders so as to strengthen global preventive and control initiatives.

The webinar features several health professionals, including CARPHA’s Dr Maurice Frank, a specialist in viral emerging infectious diseases, zoonotic diseases, epidemiology of sexually transmitted infections, and infectious diseases which primarily affect the central nervous system; PAHO’s Dr Franca des Vignes, Infectious Disease Epidemiology expert; Drs Dane Hartley and Colbert Bowen from the Guyana Livestock and Development Authority; Dr Lisa Musai and Dr Michelle Mellowes from the Ministry of Agriculture; Dr Saed Rahaman, Veterinary Public Health Ministry of Health, the Anti Rabies Unit; UWI’s Drs Karla GeorgesSimone Titus, Lisa Musai, Teola Noel, Lisa Benjamin, Anil Persad, Saed Rahaman; and Zoonotic disease task force members.
