 About UWIDEF

Launched in April 1989, its primary objective is to establish a Development and Endowment Fund to enable The UWI to better provide for stakeholders and honour its academic responsibilities. UWIDEF is managed by a committee that comprises of the chairman, representatives of the business community, members of The UWI Alumni, and key University personnel including Campus Principal Professor Rose-Marie Belle Antoine and Dr. Deirdre Charles, Director, Director of Student Services and Development.

Funds are raised primarily through the staging of two major events: The UWI Carnival Fete for a Cause and The UWI Golf Challenge. In 2022, it hosted an inaugural Garden Party which is expected to become a staple calendar event. All profits from these events go towards providing bursaries for students.

As at 2022, UWIDEF has provided 4,035 bursaries, 67 scholarships, and more than TT$21 million to well deserving students to assist with tuition costs, accommodation, books, equipment, food and travel. These scholarships are integral in enabling students to complete their studies and positively impact their families, communities, and region. Many who have benefitted from the fund have returned to pay it forward in a number of ways.

During the COVID 19 pandemic, UWIDEF contributed TT$513,000.00 towards the purchase of 500 tablets for the use of UWI students. These devices are now part of a “device loan” programme which is managed by the Alma Jordan Library.
