Hundreds of ‘Mathletes’ show up for UWI Math Fair 2023

The UWI St. Augustine Campus, Trinidad and Tobago. Wednesday, February, 15, 2023The University of the West Indies (The UWI) St. Augustine Campus Math Fair returned to in-person action with a bang, welcoming over 2100 students from more than 54 schools to the campus last Thursday 9th February 2023. 

“Unleashing the Mathlete in YOU!” was the theme, with Dr Vrijesh Tripathi, Head of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, making the point that “we should turn to our cultures - from the Abacus to Vedic Mathematics - to learn how learning mathematics can be fun.”

Dean of the Faculty of Science and Technology, Dr Brian Cockburn, commented on the many entertaining and educational activities and exercises that the Faculty team had created which showcased other disciplines students might pursue.  He said, “We are committed to maintaining high standards so that your tertiary level educational goals remain both lofty and within reach.”   

Kyle Rudden, Consulting Actuary and Managing Director of KR Services Limited, reminded his student listeners during his feature address that mathematics is a tool used in many different areas of life. 

The Math Fair 2023 challenge trophy, currently held by Naparima Girls’ High School, will be awarded to a secondary school based on overall performance and participation. 

Mrs Nicole Harris-Knudsen, Curriculum Coordinator of the Ministry of Education, was present for the day’s activities.
