UWI Actuarial Science Students Receive Scholarships From Fullerton-Long Caribbean Foundation

The UWI St. Augustine Campus, Trinidad and Tobago. Tuesday May 2, 2023- Two Actuarial Sciences students of The University of the West Indies (The UWI), St. Augustine Campus, have been awarded scholarships by the IFoA Fullerton-Long Caribbean Scholarships for 2022.  Marcus Harewood and Nirvan Sinanan are 3rd and 2nd year students respectively, in the Actuarial Sciences Programme at the Faculty of Sciences and Technology. They were selected from a list of UWI’s best and emerged winners of the scholarships, each worth US$2,150.00.

 The Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA) is the UK's only chartered professional body dedicated to educating, developing, and regulating actuaries based in the UK and internationally. IFoA regulates and represents over 30,000 members worldwide, overseeing their actuarial education at all stages of qualification and development throughout their careers. It sets examinations, continuing professional development, professional codes and disciplinary standards for its members.

 The Fullerton–Long Caribbean Scholarship was set up by UWI alumni Andrew Long and Norbert Fullerton, who are UK based actuaries of Jamaican heritage. Norbert Fullerton is currently the Head of Institutional Client Strategy, Europe, Middle East & Africa (EMEA) for Janus Henderson Investments based in the UK; and Andrew Long is Managing Director at Wills Towers Watson, with expertise in pension risk management in the UK, Channel Islands and Caribbean. Both are Ambassadors of the IFoA Foundation. The Fullerton-Long Scholarship was initiated in 2020 for The UWI Mona Actuarial programme (2 awards of USD$2,150 each) and, in 2021, it was expanded to UWI St. Augustine, awarding scholarships to two St. Augustine students in 2021 and again in 2022. 

 Dean of the Faculty of Science and Technology, Dr. Brian Cockburn, noted that in this 75th anniversary of The UWI, these two alumni represent the very core of UWI’s values and are exemplary global lenders in their field, giving back to The UWI and contributing to the development of the region. “We are grateful for their continued support for development in the region”, he said.
