ST. AUGUSTINE, Trinidad and Tobago. Friday 5th May, 2023 – The Learning Resource Centre Greens at The University of the West Indies (The UWI) St Augustine Campus were the setting for the launch of the Campus’ Volunteer Open day. The event promoted volunteerism as well as volunteer opportunities available to students and staff in support of meeting the needs of communities.

Kathy-Ann Lewis, Manager of Careers, Co-curricular & Community Engagement in the Division of Student Services and Development, noted that “Community Engagement connects the university with the communities we represent and allows students to gain key skills needed for lifelong learning and professional development, including teamwork, communication, leadership and problem-solving. The university is part of society, and our students are primary agents and active citizens in community development and sustainability.”

Every year the university brings together several non-governmental and community-based organisations to interact with students and staff. This year, there were some 18 NGOs registered in more than 25 different areas of business from accounting, agriculture, agribusiness, animal care and rescue, beach patrolling, to the arts, theatre and the performing arts, coaching/mentorship/youth development, communication, construction, court monitoring/monitoring legislative developments, family law, social justice, literacy and reading, finance, graphic design, support to terminally ill patients, social work, and sporting programmes.
