Under the leadership of Aishwarya Maharaj, the newly installed Guild president, the council aims to unite the student body to overcome challenges and pursue their innovative ideas. Ms. Maharaj is the fifth female Guild president at The UWI St. Augustine Campus to be elected. The other four female presidents were elected in 1983, 2000, 2005 and 2007 respectively.
In her inaugural address, Maharaj emphasized the importance of strengthening the relationship with The University’s administration to ensure students' interests are effectively met and was quoted as saying that the new Guild Executive was looking forward to “engaging in fruitful discussions as we work together to ensure the students' interests are prioritized.” Ms. Maharaj who is the fifth female Guild President, also acknowledged that although challenges may arise, the Guild will consistently strive to uplift the calibre of excellence among our student population, empowering them to become transformative forces.
In fact, the inauguration of the new Guild leaders symbolises a fresh start for The UWI student body, presenting an opportunity to make a tangible difference on campus. Students continue to have a platform to voice their concerns, express their ideas and enhance the overall student engagement experience.
Members of the new Guild Council take their oath of office at an installation ceremony on June 1st, 2023
This well-organized and collaborative student group, in partnership with The UWI administration, plays a crucial role in developing a vibrant and dynamic University ecosystem.
Furthermore, the installation of the new Guild facilitates an unprecedented avenue for open collaboration and dialogue between students and The UWI leadership. With ongoing and consistent student representation in place, The UWI administration can engage more closely with the Guild to develop comprehensive solutions that address their unique needs, aspirations and concerns.
According to Maharaj, the opportunity to serve is a welcomed initiative as the youth exemplify and are a testament of the power of our unity, the strength of our conviction, and our everlasting ability to remain courageous in the face of the unknown.
Professor Indar Ramnarine, Deputy Principal, The UWI St. Augustine Campus, extended her warm congratulations to the newly installed Guild Council encouraged them to utilise their platform to spearhead initiatives that address pressing issues and empower their fellow students to get involved in shaping the university's trajectory.
As we look ahead, our anticipation is accompanied by immense excitement and hope, as the installation of the new Guild marks a crucial step toward building a better UWI. The UWI anticipates a future filled with remarkable collaboration, innovation, and transformative change.
