Director of The UWI Seismic Research Centre, Dr. Erouscilla Joseph, Pro Vice-Chancellor and Campus Principal, The UWI St. Augustine Campus, Professor Rose Marie Belle-Antoine present Prime Minister Dr. The Hon Keith Rowley with a copy of his PhD thesis and an award for being the first Caribbean-born UWI-trained scientist to be appointed Head of the SRC

ST. AUGUSTINE, Trinidad and Tobago. June 29, 2023 – “One of our flagship UWI institutions, the Seismic Research Centre has served the nation, the region and its people with distinction, passion, technical expertise over the years. It is one of these incredible institutions, like others in our UWI family, - and I dare say, like the UWI itself, – that punches way above its weight,” said Professor Rose-Marie Belle Antoine, Pro Vice-Chancellor and Campus Principal, The University of The West Indies (The UWI) St. Augustine Campus. She was delivering opening remarks at an event hosted by The UWI Seismic Research Centre (SRC) as part of its 70th Anniversary and The UWI's 75th anniversary celebrations.  Themed "Honouring Legacies & Fostering the Future," the event was held on Wednesday 21 June, 2023, at the Daaga Auditorium, The UWI St. Augustine Campus.

“Our commitment to scientific excellence, regional collaboration, and the well-being of our communities has brought us this far. But our journey does not end here. Authorities must continue to invest in the future, securing our region's resilience and ensuring a safer, more prosperous Eastern Caribbean.” said Dr. Erouscilla Joseph, Director of the SRC and chair for the anniversary event. She further explained that investing in a regional organization like the UWI Seismic Research Centre is the most cost-effective mechanism for providing the scientific support needed to inform decision-making by regional authorities. “We must continue developing our understanding of how these natural shocks affect our societies, implementing more effective loss avoidance regulations and strategies, improving the engineering of our built infrastructure, and enhancing hazard mitigation strategies. The recent post-eruption recovery efforts in St. Vincent serve as a shining example of the benefits that such investments can bring,” said Dr. Joseph.

Dr Joan L. Latchman, Honorary Senior Research Fellow (Seismology) of The UWI introduces feature speaker Prime Minister Dr. The Honourable Keith Rowley at The UWI Seismic Research Centre 70th Anniversary event

Rising.” features initiatives purposely designed and aligned to reflect on the past, confront the present, and articulate plans for the future of the regional University.
