Ghanaian Royalty to speak at The UWI Distinguished Open Lecture

The UWI St. Augustine Campus, Trinidad and Tobago. Monday July 31, 2023-Campus Principal Professor Rose-Marie Antoine will welcome His Royal Majesty Otunfuo Osei Tutu II of Ghana to the St. Augustine Campus of The University of the West Indies (UWI) on Thursday 3 August, 2023 where he will deliver a Distinguished Open Lecture. The lecture forms part of His Royal Majesty’s visit to the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago. 

His Royal Majesty is the 16th Asantehene and a direct descendant of the founder of the Asante Kingdom, Osei Tutu l. Groomed in Asante traditions and statecraft since childhood, he ascended the Golden Stool on 26 April, 1999. Educated in Ghana and the United Kingdom at the University of North London where he read Human Resource Development and Public Administration. In 1989, he founded Transpomech International (Ghana) Limited. Since his ascension to the Golden Stool, he has established a solid foundation for co-operation between tradition and modernism, by emphasizing the need for tradition to redefine itself in a rapidly changing world without losing its essence. His determination to enhance the quality of education of Ghanaians led to the Association of Commonwealth Universities conferring on him the Symons Award in April 2000. 

In addition to the five campuses in the Caribbean, The UWI system comprises 10 global centres across North America, Latin America, Europe, Africa and Asia. Beyond teaching, research, and the production of knowledge, The UWI prioritizes building global partnerships and connecting knowledge to opportunities for multi-stakeholder development solutions. 

The event, which takes place at the Daaga Auditorium, is free and open to the public.
