St. Augustine, November 8, 2023. – The University of the West Indies (The UWI) St. Augustine Campus is pleased to announce that Dr. Craig Ramlal, a distinguished lecturer in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, has been appointed by UN Secretary-General António Guterres to the Multistakeholder High-Level Advisory Body on Artificial Intelligence.
The appointment follows a global request for artificial intelligence professionals, of which 2000 nominees across 128 countries were put forward but the final selection saw 38 members from all continents being brought together as experts with substantial knowledge and experience in government, business, civil society, technology, and academia.
The recommendations are crucial in enabling governments and corporations to properly react to the expanding world of artificial intelligence. The advisory body's collective knowledge ensures a comprehensive and well-informed approach to the global development, implementation, and governance of AI technology.
Dr. Ramlal joins a distinguished group of AI experts that includes Mira Murati, Chief Technology Officer of OpenAI, James Manyika, Senior Vice President of Google-Alphabet, President for Research, Technology, and Society, Natasha Crampton, Chief Responsible AI Officer at Microsoft, Omar Sultan Al Olama, UAE Minister of State for AI, and Carme Artigas, Secretary of State for Digitalization and AI in Spain.
