St. Augustine, Trinidad and Tobago - January 30, 2024 – According to the American Mathematical Society, mathematicians are in demand not only in academia but also in industries such as finance, healthcare, and technology. The University of the West Indies (The UWI) St. Augustine Campus welcomes students, teachers, and the public to join the much-anticipated UWI Math Fair 2024, hosted by the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, Faculty of Science and Technology (FST). The event is set to take place on Thursday, February 1st, 2024, from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm at the JFK Auditorium and Lecture Theatre, Daaga Auditorium, and Engineering Lecture Theatre 1 at The UWI St. Augustine Campus.
With the theme "Expand Your Math-Verse, Explore Your Potential," the Math Fair aims to develop a love for mathematics and inspire students, especially those attending secondary school to pursue further studies in the field. Mathematics plays a crucial role in the functionality and progression of society, and this event seeks to highlight its significance in an engaging and interactive manner.
The format of the Math Fair will include a formal ceremony followed by a range of interactive activities designed to make mathematics enjoyable and accessible. The event is free to attend, and participants can look forward to exploring various puzzles and logic games that present mathematics in an exciting and relatable way.
Since its inception in 2018, The UWI Math Fair has grown in popularity, becoming a staple on the campus calendar. Although, the Department of Mathematics and Statistics hosted virtual editions in 2021 and 2022 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The UWI Math Fair 2023 saw the largest attendance in its history, underscoring the growing interest in the applications of mathematics.
