The Ripple Effect: Professor Rohan Maharaj Investigates Alcohol's Impact on Family and Community

St. Augustine, January 31, 2024 – If you’ve ever been curious about the profound impact of alcohol on households and populations in Trinidad and Tobago, then the Professorial Inaugural Lecture by Professor Rohan Maharaj and appropriately titled, "Curing Curiosity: 25 years of Family and Community Health Research," is just what is needed.

 Set to take place on Thursday, 1st February 2024, at 6:00 p.m. at the UWI Teaching and Learning Complex, Lecture Theatre A1, this face-to-face lecture promises an in-depth exploration of the evolving landscape of Family Medicine across the English-speaking Caribbean over the past four decades.

 Professor Maharaj's recent focus on alcohol issues in Trinidad and the Caribbean includes the completion of the National Alcohol Survey of Households in Trinidad and Tobago (NASHTT) and his role as the Alcohol Policy Advisor to the Healthy Caribbean Coalition (HCC).

 In his presentation, attendees will learn about the development of an approach to address alcohol-related issues through research and advocacy. The lecture will also cover a broad spectrum of primary care research, including insights from the Yale and National Institutes of Health funded Eastern Caribbean Health Outcomes Research Network (ECHORN Project).

 Professor Rohan G. Maharaj, a distinguished graduate of The UWI St Augustine (BSc (Hons)), Mona (MB BS), and Cave Hill (DM) campuses, has been a dedicated Family Physician since 1989. Holding a Master of Health Sciences (Family Medicine) from the University of Toronto, he is also a Fellow of the Caribbean College of Family Physicians. Professor Maharaj's significant contributions to the development of MSc and DM programmes in Family Medicine and the Master of Public Health at the St. Augustine campus are complemented by a substantial body of work initially focusing on depression and psychosocial issues. In 2019, he made history as the first-ever Professor of Family Medicine at The University of the West Indies.
