St. Augustine, April 17, 2024 - As the world struggles with the urgent threat of climate change, which is made worse by the unrelenting rise in carbon dioxide emissions, Professor Krishpersad Manohar, an expert in the field of Mechanical Engineering, will deliver his Professorial Inaugural Lecture titled "Journey to Net Zero: Insulation for Sustainability." Set to take place on Thursday, 18 April 2024, at 6:00 p.m. at the Learning Resource Centre, The University of the West Indies (The UWI) St. Augustine Campus, this free face-to-face lecture is open to the public and will explore sustainable solutions to vital role that thermal insulation plays in reducing the environmental impact of buildings, with a focus on the residential and commercial sectors combat climate change.
In his lecture, Professor Manohar will discuss the global atmospheric CO₂ concentration soaring by 50 per cent since pre-industrial times, reaching 416 parts per million (ppm)in June 2023, urgent action is needed to curb carbon emissions.
Professor Manohar will explore the potential of sustainable insulation materials to significantly reduce carbon footprints. The environmental impact of synthetic building thermal insulation materials during production and disposal is still a matter of concern despite their widespread use. With a notable decrease in environmental impacts over the course of their lifecycle, new research on natural biodegradable fibers presents a viable substitute.
Professor Krishpersad Manohar, a distinguished Mechanical Engineer and alumnus of The UWI, commenced his academic journey at the university in 1995, rising from Assistant Lecturer to Senior Lecturer before attaining the position of Professor. As a result of his leadership roles and active committee participation he made significant contributions to the university community during his time there. Professor Krishpersad Manohar's expertise and insights promise to inspire actionable steps towards a greener, more sustainable future.
