St. Augustine - Held annually since 2012, The University of the West Indies (The UWI) St. Augustine Campus Division of Student Services and Development (DSSD)’s annual Volunteer Open Day (VOD) has effectively provided staff and students with an avenue to enhance and promote awareness of volunteer opportunities by actively engaging with representatives of various external, non-Governmental and community-based organizations. This year’s event took place on Thursday March 14th, 2024, at the Learning Resource Centre (LRC) Greens from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm.

Volunteer organizations visited the campus and provided much-needed information about opportunities for volunteerism, and answered questions about events, membership and more. Participants in the programme had a unique opportunity to engage deeply with significant social causes including education, the environment, and healthcare. They actively contributed to these sectors, gaining practical experience and developing new skills. Additionally, they expanded their networks by connecting with others who share a passion for social change, and learned about sustainable practices implemented by NGOs. This experience not only allowed them to promote sustainability in their own communities through activities like seedling distribution but also enhanced their resumes by showcasing their commitment to social responsibility. They engaged with local NGOs and community-based organisations and supported the fundraising for the upcoming Alternative Break volunteer programme.
