St. Augustine
ST. AUGUSTINE, Trinidad and Tobago. June 18th 2024 –The University of the West Indies (The UWI) St. Augustine Campus will train additional medical sciences students pursing its highly-competitive 5-year Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degrees. Starting September 2024, The UWI will welcome an additional group of students to pursue the esteemed degree as full-fee paying students. These students will be admitted into the programme as full-fee paying students once they fulfill the Faculty of Medical Sciences (FMS) existing academic standards.
As full-fee paying students, they will seamlessly integrate with their peers in the traditional September intake, sharing equal access to our rich array of resources and opportunities. This includes comprehensive faculty mentorship, personalized academic advising, state-of-the-art library facilities, vibrant research opportunities, robust student support services, and extracurricular activities. The UWI’s commitment is to foster an environment that not only supports but enhances the learning experience of every student.
However, students in this intake will be responsible for covering the full cost of their annual tuition and other compulsory fees. As such, they will not be eligible for the Government Assistance for Tuition Expenses (GATE) subsidy, National Bursaries provided by the Government of Trinidad and Tobago, government scholarships, or other related funding schemes.
The UWI has a history of accommodating students who independently fund their education (tuition and compulsory fees), and the FMS is keen on progressively expanding access to our programmes for this group of students come September 2024. This move by the FMS aligns with The UWI’s overarching triple-A strategy, which aims to enhance:
Access: significantly increasing the availability of high-quality tertiary education.
Alignment: strengthening valuable partnerships between our university and key sectors such as academia, industry, and international organizations to meet regional needs.
Agility: leveraging The UWI’s resources and capabilities to be responsive to the needs of key stakeholders in a dynamic, ever-changing environment.
The UWI invites prospective students to seize this remarkable opportunity. Applications for the September 2024 full-fee paying MBBS programme are now open and will be accepted until July 31, 2024. To apply, please:
