St. Augustine, Trinidad & Tobago, September 27, 2024 – Seventeen of the finest minds of The University of the West Indies (The UWI) family were among the 65 recognised for their contributions at Trinidad and Tobago's Republic Day National Awards 2024.
One of the three recipients of the country's highest award, the Order of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago (ORTT), was bestowed on Professor Patrick Hosein, professor in electrical and computer engineering, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at The UWI, St Augustine Campus.
Professor Hosein attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) where he obtained five degrees including a PhD in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. He has worked at Bose Corporation, Bell Laboratories, AT&T Laboratories, Ericsson and Huawei. He has published extensively with over 100 refereed technical journal and conference publications and holds 40 granted and 42 pending patents in the areas of telecommunications and wireless technologies. Professor Hosein was nominated for the Ericsson Inventor of the Year award in 2004, was the Huawei US Wireless Research Employee of the year for 2007, was a NIHERST icon in Science and Technology in 2013, is a 2015 Anthony Sabga Caribbean Laureate for Science and Technology and was inducted into the St. Mary’s College Hall of Fame in 2015.
Other recipients come from a wide cross-section of citizens associated with The University such as retirees, alumni, present faculty and staff, an honorary graduate and a posthumous awardee. They represent not only the body of high performers at The UWI in a discipline as specific as the musical arts to the behavioural sciences, but above all, The University's commitment to community service.
Professor Rose-Marie Antoine, Pro Vice-Chancellor and Campus Principal at The UWI St. Augustine Campus extended her congratulations, “I am so proud to see so many members of The UWI family honoured at this year’s Republic Day National Awards. Each of these awardees, whether through their contributions in education, the arts, science, or community service, have impacted significantly on our society. Their recognition is a reflection of the values we hold dear at The UWI—dedication, excellence, and a deep commitment to service. We are proud to have played a part in their journey, and we celebrate their achievements.”
