ST. AUGUSTINE, Trinidad and Tobago. November 8, 2024 – Members of the business community and the public are invited to attend the Campus Principal’s Research Awards and Conference at The University of the West Indies (The UWI) St. Augustine campus, taking place on Thursday, November 14 to Friday, November 15, 2024. This event offers a unique opportunity to preview The UWI’s pioneering research initiatives, highlighting the diverse ways our research can support and enhance industry R&D goals. The keynote address by Hon. Minister of Finance Colm Imbert will further emphasize “The Commercialisation of Research Outputs for Entrepreneurship and Economic Development of the Country,” shedding light on how UWI’s research can be leveraged to create entrepreneurial pathways, foster innovation, and strengthen economic diversification.
The awards and conference which honours The UWI’s top researchers, showcases The UWI’s extensive network, comprising over 50 departments, specialist units, centres, and institutes, all driving innovative research across fields crucial to Caribbean growth. Attendees will see first-hand the calibre of research available, offering a wealth of partnership opportunities for businesses seeking advanced solutions and a competitive edge.
This year’s event also introduces two new award categories: the Hurricane and Earthquake Alleviation Research (HEAR) Award and the Most Outstanding Early Career Researcher Award, underscoring The UWI’s commitment to resilience and emerging talent. The ceremony will spotlight pioneering work across fields including climate resilience, biodiversity, economic policy, health, education, crime and public safety.
Professor Rose-Marie Antoine, Pro-Vice Chancellor and Campus Principal, noted, "These awards celebrate the important impact of UWI research across the Caribbean. Supporting innovation that addresses critical issues like disaster resilience and economic diversification aligns with our mission to create meaningful change in the region."
This two-day event showcases UWI’s cutting-edge research, offering networking and partnership opportunities. Day 1 honours top researchers, while Day 2 features sessions and research exhibitions. Attendees can explore UWIMade products, including premium chocolate, construction sealants, and Biophyte crop enhancer. Displays will also feature the Phi and GPan devices, selected researcher publications, and UWI’s global research platforms, such as UWISpace, UWI Scholar, and UWI Journals, highlighting the University’s commitment to accessible research.
