ST. AUGUSTINE, Trinidad and Tobago. December 12, 2024 – Students at The University of the West Indies (The UWI) St. Augustine Campus continue to receive accolades for their commitment to disaster risk management, climate change, and environmental sustainability. This academic year, The Caribbean Catastrophe Risk Insurance Facility (CCRIF) has awarded seven to our students for their excellence and commitment in these critical fields.

The CCRIF Scholarship Programme supports regional development, creating exciting opportunities for emerging scholars from seven regional universities. As the leading university in the Caribbean, The UWI is proud of our scholarship recipients and extends our congratulations on their outstanding performance.  Notably, three of our postgraduate students received CCRIF scholarships. Their names and areas of specialisation are as follows:

Mr. Daniel Rooplal: Master of Science (MSc) in Climate Studies

Ms. Reanna Swamber: Master of Science (MSc) in Urban and Regional Planning

Ms. Seychelle Woods: Master of Philosophy (MPhil) in Geography

The MSc in Climate Studies leverages The UWI’s internationally recognised expertise in climate research to develop professionals capable of addressing complex climate challenges. This interdisciplinary programme is unique in its ability to tackle the wide-ranging impacts of climate change, offering participants opportunities to focus on concentrations such as Health, Energy, Food and Agriculture, Climate Justice, or Sport, Tourism and Climate Change. The blend of specialised focus and a comprehensive interdisciplinary approach makes the programme dynamic and impactful.

Moreover, The CCRIF also provided funds for four students of The UWI pursuing bachelor’s degrees in various disciplines that align with their mission. These scholarships were awarded to second and third-year students. At the undergraduate level, the students listed below received CCIF funding to continue their studies:

Ms. Jemima Evans: Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Civil with Environmental Engineering

Mr. Jevis John: Bachelor of Science (BSc) Geography

Mr. Mikail Hosein: Bachelor of Science (BSc) Civil with Environmental Engineering
