St. Augustine, May 19th 2025 -The Management of The UWI St Augustine Campus announces the start of academic programming at its South Campus beginning August 2025. The South Campus did yeoman national service during the COVID-19 pandemic and since being returned to The UWI, extensive repairs have been carried out and security upgraded despite the scarce financial resources of The UWI. During the last two (2) years a comprehensive review was done on operations, recalibrating and systematically implementing the South Campus’s focus and key goals. The UWI remains committed to centering the South Campus as a prized asset in the genuine development of the country, underscoring The UWI’s strategic goals of access, agility, alignment and sustainability.
The Campus will be the home of the newly launched Global School of Medicine (GSM), leveraging the world-ranked reputation of The UWI and especially The UWI’s Faculty of Medicine (FMS), to serve primarily international students pursuing the Doctor of Medicine (MD) programme. This will bring in much needed foreign exchange to the country. Currently, applications are open for this new, competitive programme. The South Campus will also host several other traditional programmes from various faculties, such as the Faculty of Science and Technology, the Faculty of Food and Agriculture, the Faculty of Humanities and Education and the FMS in blended formats. In addition, a rental agreement has been signed enabling The UWI Roytec School, already based in the South, to share the premises and upscale its offerings.
A full, sophisticated IT network has been established at the South Campus, complete with state of the art ‘smart’ classrooms. The Campus is also the home of The UWI STA’s Mexico-funded Geospatial Observatory. One hall of residence has been completed.
The GSM, together with the Couva Training Facility linked to the Couva Hospital forms part of an exciting initiative to develop a South/ Central–North medical artery of services, creating a specialized hub of excellence in medicine, innovation and medical research. This will not only elevate the level of medical care in that part of the country but will fulfil another key strategic focus of the current St. Augustine Campus Administration – inclusivity and widened access. In the last year, under its UWI on the Move project, the Campus has been brought to rural areas such as Moruga, Blanchisseuse and La Brea. Important efforts to better serve Tobago have also been made including the strengthening of partnerships to ensure that Tobagonian students and communities are more fully integrated into The UWI experience.
Reflecting on the Campus’s role in national development, Professor Rose-Marie Belle Antoine, Pro-Vice Chancellor and Campus Principal, “The UWI St. Augustine Campus is excited to work with the Government of Trinidad and Tobago as a key developmental partner in its shared goals of strengthening the education, skills-base and research imperatives of the country. Maximising the capacity of the South Campus to ensure that the country’s productive resources are put to optimum use is an important facet of these laudable goals.”
