Rachel Manley expected at UWI Campus Literature Week

The University of the West Indies, St. Augustine Campus, will celebrate Campus Literature Week from Monday 2nd to Friday 6th March, 2009. This event will showcase both professional and amateur writers sharing their recent and past works at daily readings from 12:00 noon to 1:30 p.m. each day of the week. The university will also host a Gala reading featuring author and memoirist Ms. Rachel Manley on Friday 6th March, at the Centre for Language Learning (CLL) Auditorium from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m.

The Gala reading will feature Ms. Rachel Manley, made famous for her memoirs detailing her experience growing up in one of Jamaica’s most influential families. Her first memoir, Drumblair: Memories of a Jamaican Childhood, which focused on the lives of her prominent grandparents, Norman and Edna Manley, won the Canadian Governor General's Prize for non-fiction in 1997. Her second memoir entitled ‘Slipstream: A Daughter Remember’, is devoted to the political and private lives of her father former Jamaican Prime Minister Michael Manley. Rachel Manley is also a celebrated poet having won the Jamaica Centennial Medal for Poetry, and the Jamaica Centennial Award for Poetry in 1979.

The featured noontime readings by various authors will be held in the AV Room, 3rd Floor Campus Main Library from Monday 2nd to Thursday 5th March. On Friday 6th March, 2009, the noontime reading will be held in Amphitheatre B, Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex, Mt. Hope.
