UWI Math Fair Inspires Curiosity in Using Mathematics to Drive Caribbean Innovation

St. Augustine, Trinidad and Tobago – February 04, 2026 – In today’s rapidly evolving world, mathematics is more relevant than ever as it underpins the cutting-edge technologies driving global and regional progress. With this in mind, the Department of Mathematics and Statistics of the Faculty of Science and Technology (FST) at The University of the West Indies (The UWI), St. Augustine Campus will host the 2026 edition of UWI Math Fair on Thursday, February 5, 2026, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at venues across the campus.   

 Being hosted across the campus at the JFK Auditorium, JFK Lecture Theatre, JFK Quadrangle, Engineering Lecture Theatre 1 and the Learning Resource Centre (LRC) Greens, this year’s theme is "Island Innovators: Mathematics Powering the Future." This year’s fair features inclusive activities designed for Forms 1–6 and N1 and aims to build confidence, reduce math anxiety and foster a culture of curiosity and achievement. Additionally, participants will be immersed in a dynamic programme of interactive activities, demonstrations and competitions designed to make mathematics fun, practical, and accessible.

 Targeted to students, teachers, parents and members of the public, since its inception in 2018, the much-anticipated fair has grown in popularity, becoming a staple on the national calendar. This Ministry of Education–approved educational event complements classroom teaching while motivating learners through teamwork, creativity, problem-solving, and critical thinking.

 Inter-school competitions include the Math Quiz and Feud, Math Creativity Contest, Math Modelling, and the Teachers’ Game Design Challenge. Participation is rewarded with certificates and prizes. Furthermore, secondary school students, in particular, gain valuable exposure to future study paths and careers in mathematics and STEM through direct interaction with faculty, sponsors and current university students, helping them envision themselves in future academic and professional roles.
