Description:

The annual student led production at the Department of Creative and Festival Arts (DCFA), The University of the West Indies (UWI), St. Augustine, is here once again. Continuing in the twenty-two year tradition of the Department, this year’s Production II class has chosen to mount “Fragments”, a well crafted contemporary performance which celebrates the theatrical scripts, essays and poems of Caribbean Nobel Laureate, Derek Walcott.

“Fragments” has been described as a labour of love for the Production II class, who along with their two directors, Marvin George and Louis Mc Williams (both graduates of the Creative Arts Department), have been collectively ‘devising’ the performance. The show incorporates dance, song, mime, improvisation and spoken word in this treatment of Walcott. It is sometimes felt that Walcott’s writing is inaccessible and difficult. The team however believes that it is their duty to challenge this misconception and bring this writer’s work to new audiences. With this in mind, the team has been working assiduously to achieve this through their performance experiment, without compromising the integrity of the author’s work.

This theatrical production will be hosted for two weekends at the Learning Resource Centre, UWI, St. Augustine from March 26th – 29th and April 2nd – 4th 2009. These DCFA student productions have served as a breeding ground for some of our nations most visible and genius cultural talents. Fresh faces will be introduced this year and they will no doubt be eager to make their mark on stage.

“Fragments” promises to be as entertaining as it is thought provoking, and a true delight for all who attend.
