For Release Upon Receipt - July 9, 2009

St. Augustine

The power of the spoken word will be unleashed at a poetry slam entitled ‘Wordsmiths: I'm Not Who You Think I Am'. Artists, poets and writers will converge and bring words to life on Friday 10th and Saturday 11th July, at 7:30 p.m. at the Centre for Language Learning Auditorium (CLL), The University of the West Indies (UWI). The poetry slam is hosted by Arts-in-Action, a performance group born out of the UWI Department of Creative & Festival Arts, in an effort to raise funds to attend the International Youth Poetry Slam Festival. The festival, themed ‘Brave New Voices’ will be held from the 13th to 17th July, 2009 in Chicago, USA.

‘Brave New Voices’ will feature approximately 500 young artists, educators, poets, and mentors. Now in its 12th year, ‘Brave New Voices’ 2009 continues to create a forum and community among an ever-growing number of youth interested in creating literature and reinvesting in education through the power of the spoken word. The festival will showcase the talent and dedication of these young artists.

All proceeds from the UWI poetry slam event will be used to sponsor the six artists chosen to represent Trinidad and Tobago at the festival.   For further information, please call (868) 663-0327 or (868) 662-2002 Ext. 2377.
