St. Augustine

A new Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) has been signed between The University of the West Indies (UWI) and the Chaguaramas Development Authority (CDA). The MOU was signed on Wednesday 12th August, 2009, at 11 a.m. at the office of the Campus Principal, St. Augustine Campus. The MOU is expected to encourage the enlargement and strengthening of the capabilities of both parties through the use of material, facilities and human resources. Pro Vice Chancellor and Campus Principal, Professor Clement Sankat and Ms. Judith Mark, General Manager, CDA Signed the agreement on behalf of their institutions.

This MOU outlines several areas of cooperation in relation to the work being done on the Government’s large farm at Tucker Valley. The agreement enables collaborative research to develop agribusiness models, suitable varieties, production systems, agricultural machinery designs, post-harvest technologies and product development. This MOU will also create an opportunity for joint design and delivery of training programmes in the general areas of farming, fisheries and agricultural science and technology, research and experimentation, environmental management, including marine science, infrastructure development and enhancement, recreational and tourism product development, and other areas relevant to the achievement of food security and sustainable development.

The University recognises its strategic role as a centre of innovation and technology development with respect to Caribbean agricultural development. As such, this partnership will provide a great opportunity for UWI to extend itself into the commercial arena, where technologies developed at The UWI can be tested and eventually commercialized for global use.
