The University of the West Indies (UWI) opened its doors to first-year students with its annual UWI Life student orientation programme. UWI Life 2009 started on Wednesday 2nd September and  continued until Friday 4th September. This three-day event welcomed the estimated 5,000 undergraduate students entering the University in the 2009/2010 academic year.

The programme, which is designed to prepare students for their university experience, is broken down into three complementary sessions. The first session, ‘UWI Life Support’, was held on Wednesday 2nd September, at 5.30 p.m. in the Sport and Physical Education Centre (SPEC). This session was created for the parents, guardians, and spouses of our incoming students. UWI recognises the importance of a strong support system for academic success. As such, this seminar is expected to sensitize those closest to the students to the ways in which they can offer much-needed support. This session, which addressed the lifestyle of mature, evening and postgraduate students, was designed to offer advice about how to manage the pressures that arise from juggling a full-time career and academic studies.
