UWI Antigua Centre Has New Head

Mr. Ian H. Benn, former Chief Operations Officer of the Antigua & Barbuda International Institute of Technology (ABITT), is the new head of The University of the West Indies’ Antigua & Barbuda University Centre.

Mr. Benn, whose appointment became effective on Monday 17 September, is also the former Business Development Officer of ABITT, where he wrote and presented project proposals to international and local agencies such as the Organizaton of American States (OAS), InfoDev, the Maritime Training Institute of England, the former Barclays Bank, the ABI Group and the Antiguan Government.

His appointment was officially announced by Mrs. Luz Longsworth, Acting Director of the School of Continuing Studies (SCS), upon the retirement this month of Dr. Ermina Osoba, the previous Resident Tutor & Head of the Antigua & Barbuda University Centre.A national of Antigua & Barbuda, Mr. Benn brings to his new post a strong educational background in applied economics, finance and project management, and practical experience in higher educational management. Prior to his position at ABITT, Mr. Benn worked as a manager within Antigua’s private international banking sector, office manager for the Brookland Inter-Generational Center, Inc. in Washington D.C. and a mortgage processor at the Carteret Savings Bank in New Jersey. A strong advocate of lifelong learning and professional development, Mr. Benn has extensive teaching experience at Kearney High School (New Jersey), Antigua Grammar School, ABITT, University of Guyana, UWI (Cave Hill) and UWIDEC.

Mr. Benn hopes to complete his Ph.D. by the end of 2008, and is currently pursuing his doctoral research in Technology Management, specialising in Human Resource Development and Industrial Training at the Indiana State University. He received his Bachelor of Social Science (Economics) at the University of Guyana in 1985, and a graduate diploma in Development Studies from the same institution in 1986.
