Dr. Kusha Haraksingh speaks at the Belize Chamber of Commerce & Industry 90th Annual General Meeting

Dr. Kusha Haraksingh, Senior Lecturer in History and Associate Fellow at the Institute of International Relations (IIR), The University of the West Indies (UWI), St. Augustine Campus, was the feature speaker at the Belize Chamber of Commerce & Industry’s 90th Annual General Meeting. The meeting took place on Thursday 29th April, 2010, when a new Executive Council was elected in front of a packed crowd of Chamber members and invited guests.  

Dr. Haraksingh, who is also the Lead Negotiator for Legal and Institutional Issues in the CARICOM/Canada Trade and Development Agreement and the Chairman of the CARICOM Competition Commission, began his presentation with the Rule of Law in the Caribbean context, the revised Treaty of Chaguaramas, the Caribbean Court of Justice, and EPAs. He also addressed anti-competitive business practices, specifically speaking against indirect price fixing, while promoting the importance of best business practices. In addition, he mentioned the significance not only of auditing your company’s financial statements, but also auditing your company’s business practices against the Rule of Law, as well as discouraging the provision of unconscionable terms in business contracts and the importance of having proper labeling for goods. After concluding his presentation, Dr. Haraksingh received a hearty applause from an appreciative audience who commented on the timeliness of the presentation and how much they learned about the trading environment and opportunities in the Caribbean. 

The Executive Council’s new officers consist of Ms. Kay Menzies, President, Mrs. Amparo Masson, Past President, Mr. Jose Alpuche, V.P. Industry, Mr. Israel Marin, V.P. Services, Mr. Alberto Young, V.P. Commerce, Mr. Rene Blanco, Treasurer, and Mrs. Ashanti Martin, Secretary. New council members who were elected by the membership are Mr. Nolan Michael of the Bowen & Bowen Group of Companies, Mr. David Craig of Citrus Products of Belize Ltd., Mr. Carlo Habet of Brothers Habet, Mr. Rishi Mungal of Morgan & Morgan Trust Corporation (Belize) Ltd., and Mrs. Claudette El Ters of Maheia’s United Concrete & Supplies Ltd. 

Other matters of mention include the presentation of 2009’s Financial Statements by the Treasurer, Mr. Rene Blanco and the President’s Report given by outgoing President, Mrs. Amparo Masson.
