Lend a Helping Hand to Hurricane Tomas victims with the UWI Guild

For Release Upon Receipt - November 18, 2010

St. Augustine

The Guild of Students at The UWI, St. Augustine Campus, is seeking contributions to its food and supplies drive in aid of St. Lucia and St. Vincent & the Grenadines. The Guild is working with the St. Vincent and the Grenadines Student Association (VINSA) and St. Lucian Students Association (LuSATT) in order to get supplies needed to aid in the restoration/relief efforts of both nations.

Hurricane Tomas ravaged St. Lucia and St. Vincent and the Grenadines from Saturday 30th through Sunday 31st October, 2010. The two islands sustained severe damage, mostly structural and infrastructural with cost estimates of millions of Eastern Caribbean Dollars.

Communities are cut off as access roads have been destroyed or blocked by landslides, many families are homeless and 14 persons have lost their lives in St. Lucia while others have been reported missing in both St. Vincent and the Grenadines and St. Lucia. A collaborative effort by Disaster Preparedness Offices and utility providers in both countries has resulted in electricity being restored to parts of the islands, however there are still many who remain without these services.

The Guild of Students has initiated efforts among the student body but, due to the magnitude of the relief effort necessary, they are unable to undertake the task on their own. Several students have personally been affected as there are almost 200 students from St. Vincent and the Grenadines and over 300 from St. Lucia who study at the St. Augustine Campus.

In this regard the Guild of Students invites contributions of money and/or donations of any of the following items:

  • Non perishable food items
  • Medical supplies
  • Water
  • Powdered milk
  • Personal hygiene items
  • Galvanize
  • Lumber
  • Bricks
  • Nails
  • Other construction material

Items can be dropped off at the Guild Office.

Cash donations can be deposited at Republic Bank, account number 160134325031.
