St. Augustine
The Centre for Language Learning (CLL) at The University of the West Indies (UWI), St. Augustine Campus, will host its second triennial Open House from Friday 25th to Saturday 26th March, 2011, from 9am to 5pm, each day.
Themed, ‘Go global. Learn a language’, the Open House will feature a variety of cultural displays and activities, including international cinema, interactive games, cooking and martial art demonstrations and live performances. Friday is dedicated to the UWI and secondary school student population, aiming to teach them the importance of learning a foreign language in the context of global citizenship. Students will find out how they can learn up to 10 foreign languages with the CLL, with the spotlight on four in particular – French, German, Chinese and Japanese.
Visitors to the two-day event can choose to begin their experience at Café Cultural, where they can savour a hot cup of Brazilian coffee while taking in the sights of Brazil during a virtual tour. There’s also the option to learn about the Chinese tea culture and delight in a hot “cuppa,” at the Chinese Tea Hour. Those who would prefer to jump right into the activities, can play a round of the French game Pétanque, or take a class in Italian or Japanese. As the day progresses, guests can learn the art of Japanese calligraphy, pay a virtual visit to the Uffizi Museum in Florence, Italy, and participate in Samba and Forró dance classes, among the host of other activities carded for the day.
Saturday’s activities will look at foreign language proficiency from a cultural perspective, with cooking classes featuring the French Crepe, Italian Tiramisu and Chinese Yuan Xiao, a Japanese Anime/Manga demonstration, and a lesson on how to use chopsticks. Visitors on that day can partake in a special lunch of the traditional Portuguese dish, Feijoada, and settle in to watch the Brazilian romantic comedy, “A Mulher Invisível” (The Invisible Woman).
This event is free and open to the public.
