UWI & business community work towards providing jobs for students

For Release Upon Receipt - March 17, 2011

St. Augustine

As part of the annual World of Work (WOW) programme, a two-day Recruitment Fair aimed at securing vacation and graduate employment for University of the West Indies (UWI) students is taking place on March 17th and 18th, 2011.

The Recruitment Fair is a unique forum that gives students access to over 50 organisations offering recruitment opportunities. The UWI Sport & Physical Education Centre (SPEC) becomes the space where students get to interact with company representatives, learn about their organisations and even apply for positions on the spot. Students are encouraged to treat the event as an actual interview scenario, dressing in business wear and walking with copies of their CVs.  The first day of the Recruitment Fair is specifically for first and second-year students, who get the opportunity to apply for and secure vacation employment. The second day is for third-year students who get the opportunity to secure jobs that they could take up upon completing the university in a few months.

Over the years, the business community has been quite supportive of this event, taking advantage of the chance to meet with and secure some of the nation’s youngest and brightest. Companies taking part in this year’s Recruitment Fair include Angostura Limited, Nestle Trinidad & Tobago Ltd, Neal & Massy, Wood Group Limited, Hilton Trinidad & Conference Centre, Fujitsu Caribbean (Trinidad) Ltd, Ernst & Young, Digi-Data Systems Limited, BG Trinidad and Tobago, Atlantic LNG Company of Trinidad & Tobago, Central Bank of Trinidad and Tobago, Scotiabank T&T Ltd, Columbus Communications Trinidad Limited (Flow), TSTT and the Tourism Development Company.

The Recruitment Fair is the culmination of the World of Work (WOW) programme hosted by UWI in partnership with Republic Bank Ltd. WOW is aimed at effectively readying UWI students to enter into the working world through a series of events which include an Interview Preparation Workshop, the WOW Seminar, Mock Interview Sessions and a Networking Workshop.
