UWI Arts-in-Action hosts Discovery Camp 2012

For Release Upon Receipt - June 13, 2012

St. Augustine

Arts-in-Action, the Applied Creative Arts programme of the Department of Creative and Festival Arts (DCFA), The University of the West Indies (UWI), will be conducting its annual Discovery Camp for children aged 5 to 12. The camp will run for two sessions: July 9th-28th, and August 6th-18th, 2012, at the Senior Common Room, UWI, St. Augustine.

Now in its 23rd year, the Discovery Camp seeks to provide a facility where children can spend their July-August vacation engaging in a fun and educational arts-based process, using the disciplines of art, dance, drama and music as learning and developmental tools. Discovery Camp develops its annual arts curricula from broader educational themes or domestic and international observances of relevance to our own cultural space.

Given the commemoration of our nation’s 50th Anniversary of Independence, the DCFA’s 25th Anniversary and Arts-in-Action’s 18th Anniversary in 2012, it is only fitting that this year’s camp highlight these celebrations; hence the title, ‘Hearts of Gold.’ Through the arts, campers will enjoy a vacation experience that will not only enlighten, but will allow them to explore and reflect on these milestones. The camp package includes field trips and weekly visits to the pool.

Discovery Camp hours are 9am-3pm, Monday to Friday. Registration for the first cycle closes on June 29th, and the second cycle on July 27th, 2012.
