UWI hosts Computing Summer Boot Camp 2012

The Department of Computing and Information Technology (DCIT), at The University of the West Indies (UWI), St. Augustine, will host its Computing Summer Boot Camp 2012 from July 23rd-27th, 2012. The camp will run from 8.30am to 4.30pm each day at The UWI St. Augustine Campus and targets upper form secondary school students and others interested in the fields of Computing and Information Technology (IT).

Now in its second year, the Computing Summer Boot Camp 2012, initiated by Dr. Permanand Mohan, a Senior Lecturer at the DCIT, aims to stimulate local interest in Computing and IT. The Boot Camp also seeks to encourage undergraduate enrolment in degree programmes offered at DCIT, and to expose young students to cutting-edge technology and research in the field.  

Participants will be exposed to a wide range of topics including Programming, Web Development, Mobile Application Development, Wireless Networking, Database Systems, Hardware and Software Essentials and Mental Mathematics. These activities will be offered via a mixture of seminars, hands-on laboratory sessions and practical demonstrations led by lecturers and postgraduate students of the Department, and industry experts.

Participants can also look forward to special presentations by representatives from leading international IT companies, and field trips to some of Trinidad’s IT companies to observe technology in action. In addition, they will learn about several university projects, student competitions and computing organizations which they may become involved in. Participants will also experience technology at play using the Kinect for Xbox 360 and a variety of Local Area Network (LAN) games, and have a chance to relax during the camp’s social games evening.   

Participation in the DCIT’s Computing Summer Boot Camp 2012 costs $1300, and registration is open until July 1st. A number of camp scholarships are available, that cover the full registration cost. Secondary school students are encouraged to apply.
